A first Class city in the North.

Laoag City is situated in the North Luzon Economic Triangle, a special area designated by the Philippine government for economic development. As such, Laoag enjoys an advantage over others, because it is less than an hour away from such important trade partners like Hong Kong and Taiwan.

With the inflow of products and foreign investments, several financial institutions have been setup. The Northwest Luzon Quadrangle is a project that is boosting the agricultural sector and also various other industries like local handicrafts.
Today there are several industries growing, including furniture ships, jewelry making, processing of rice, and other factories.

Laoag is a first-class city in the Philippines’ northern provinces. The general ambience here is a blend of historic sites dating back from the Spanish era and tropical beach comforts. Touring the place relaxes the soul and allows one to reflect on bygone days.

Renowned as a high class city located at the heart of Ilocos Norte in the Philippines, Laoag is the center of political, economic and industrial activities of the province. Being the center of almost all commercial activities of Ilocos Norte, Laoag is recognized by the Philippine government as the province’s capital city. Based on the outcomes of the 2000 Census in the city, the population of the city is estimated at 94,446 with households of 19,751.

One of the factors that affected the fast development of the economy of Laoag is its location. If we will have a look at the geography of this city, we can see that if a person will travel from Laoag to Hong Kong, China, by plane, it will only take that person 45 minutes. On the other hand, if a person will travel from the city to the Kaohsiung port city in Taiwan, it will only take that person 30 minutes. Because of the short distance between Laoag city and these Asian cities, trade and industry in the city is improving.

Aside from the location of the city, the improving number of financial institutions and banks that are established in Laoag also helped with its economic expansion. According to statistics, there are presently more than 30 banks and financial services companies that provide the needs of its residents. The presence of these institutions in the city is believed to help a lot to provide the economic needs of Laoag.

Its improving tourism industry is also one of the sources of income of people in the city. Every year, the proportion of people who go to Laoag to visit the historic sites and tourist spots like beach resorts increases. Because of the mushrooming of attractive beach resorts in Laoag, the employment rate in the city also improves.

Some of the tourist spots that travelers can visit at Laoag are the Sinking Bell Tower, the Tobacco Monopoly Monument, the Ilocos Lighthouse and the Ilocos Norte Museum, Bangui Windmill, Pagudpud white sand Beaches, Marcos Museum and the world heritage site Paoay Church. On the other hand, Laoag is very known for the Fort Ilocandia Resort the only 5 star Hotel in north luzon.

As tourism starts to play a vital part in the growth of the economy, the transportation infrastructure of Laoag City is keeping pace. The Laoag International Airport is capable of handling both local and international flights.

Most of the major airliners now offer direct flights to the city, a testament to the growing number of people interested in visiting and/or conducting business. The Currimao Port is the center of shipping services and other goods.

Once in the metropolis, there are several ways that people can move about. Everything from buses, to jeepneys and taxis are widely available. For shorter trips there are the ubiquitous tricycles.

Apart from being distinguished as the provincial capital, Laoag City is also the center of the fast developing North Luzon Economic Triangle. The city is situated in a strategic area close to the economic centers of East Asia and is reachable in 45 minutes by plane from Manila. Having critical infrastructure such as the Laoag Airport at Gabu and the Currimao Port makes Laoag the port of entry of goods and services complemented by an extensive road and highway system that connects it to other cities. An extensive banking system is also found in the city with an impressive number of twenty-five different local, domestic, and foreign banks ready to serve any financial needs.

With a 12,747.35m total land area, Laoag City provides a large opportunity for economic expansion. The historic scenic tourist spots, availability of internationally competitive accommodations and facilities, and the presence of supportive national government agencies, makes Laoag an ecotourism center, as classified by the Department of Tourism. The Northwestern Luzon Growth Quadrangle, fondly called the NORTH QUAD, also aims to develop rural areas through an integrated countryside agri-industrial development approach with emphasis/focus in attaining sustainable and equitably growth; increase the productivity of agriculture and fisheries; encourage industrial competitiveness in the local and foreign markets like Taiwan, Japan, South Korea and Hong Kong. Plans are also being undertaken for the establishment of an ECO-TOURISM village, which will showcase the rich cultural heritage of the Ilokanos and the local industries.
